Professional Truck Driver focuses on the most common causes of truck-related incidents and provides truck drivers with defensive driving strategies to avoid collisions and traffic violations.   • Describe techniques for maximizing safety while driving

What Participants Will Learn:

Throughout the course, participants will learn how to recognize both potential and immediate hazards and how to avoid collisions in a variety of driving conditions and environments. Participants will be motivated to change their behind-the-wheel behaviors and attitudes by learning the best practice approach to safe and responsible driving. Focusing on defensive driving strategies and behavior modification, the course covers key topics and issues including:

  • Managing common situations—speed, right-of-way, driving left of center, proper following distance, lane changes and lane markings, safe passing and overtaking

  • Handling challenging situations—head-on crashes, work zones, turns and intersection collisions, and scanning and backing techniques

  • Inspecting your equipment—pre-trip, en-route and post-trip inspections

  • Physical and mental conditions —stress management, drowsy driving and sleep patterns, anger, anxiety, vision, hearing, mobility and medications

  • Identifying hazardous conditions beyond our control—road, traffic, weather and light

  • Understanding distracted driving—manual, visual and cognitive distractions
