Professional Truck Driver 5th Edition

Professional Truck Driver focuses on the most common causes of truck-related incidents and provides truck drivers with defensive driving strategies to avoid collisions and traffic violations. With proper training and the reinforcement of safe driving practices, your organization can potentially decrease liability exposure, financial risk and escalating costs related to legal judgments, fleet insurance premiums, workers’ compensation claims and vehicle repair and replacement expenses.

Course Objectives Include The Ability To:
  • Define personal and professional excellence as it relates to professional truck driving

  • Explain the importance of driving with consideration for others on the road

  • Identify the three factors that contribute to collisions

  • Recognize personal responsibilities to protect the motoring public and themselves

  • Recognize personal driving tendencies, attitudes and habits

  • Identify driving hazards and learn safe and legal alternate choices for dealing with different hazards

  • Describe techniques for maximizing safety while driving

What Participants Will Learn:

Throughout the course, participants will learn how to recognize both potential and immediate hazards and how to avoid collisions in a variety of driving conditions and environments. Participants will be motivated to change their behind-the-wheel behaviors and attitudes by learning the best practice approach to safe and responsible driving. Focusing on defensive driving strategies and behavior modification, the course covers key topics and issues including:

  • Managing common situations—speed, right-of-way, driving left of center, proper following distance, lane changes and lane markings, safe passing and overtaking

  • Handling challenging situations—head-on crashes, work zones, turns and intersection collisions, and scanning and backing techniques

  • Inspecting your equipment—pre-trip, en-route and post-trip inspections

  • Physical and mental conditions —stress management, drowsy driving and sleep patterns, anger, anxiety, vision, hearing, mobility and medications

  • Identifying hazardous conditions beyond our control—road, traffic, weather and light

  • Understanding distracted driving—manual, visual and cognitive distractions

Course price includes student materials, certificate, continental breakfast, and refreshments.
